LinkedIn is an invaluable tool that enables you to detail your previous experience, outline your key skills and accomplishments, showcase your recommendations and endorsements, and ultimately connect with people from your industry and beyond. Not only is it useful to stay in contact with your network and keep up to date with industry trends, but it’s also the perfect job searching tool.
When looking for a new opportunity, the process can be made a lot easier by having an up to date and attractive LinkedIn profile, for potential hiring managers and recruiters to see. Below are five actionable tips you can implement in order to make your LinkedIn profile more searchable and stand out from the competition.
Your LinkedIn picture is the first thing a future employer or recruiter is going to see when they visit your profile. It’s important that this picture is professional and a true reflection of how you want to portray yourself. Don’t use a blurry or zoomed in photo, avoid photos from years ago and don’t use a picture of you on a night out after a few pints!
The ideal picture would be a recent, high-quality photo of you dressed in appropriate workplace attire, making eye contact with the camera, portraying a relaxed and confident demeanour.
As a recruiter, I’ve seen quite a few ‘interesting’ headlines on peoples LinkedIn profiles recently, so I feel this is worth addressing. In order for your profile to be searchable, you need to clearly articulate your current job title or the one you’re hoping to achieve. I’ve seen some HR candidates use something along the lines of ‘A Motivated and dedicated HR Professional looking for a new role’ as their headline. Now, imagine you’re a recruiter or a hiring manager and you’re looking for a HR Manager to join your HR team. You go onto LinkedIn, what do you put into the search bar? 99% of recruiters are going to search for ‘HR Manager’ – so you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage by adding unnecessary words that aren’t going to be searched for.
Ultimately, your headline should be your current job title or the job title you’re looking for.
Profile summaries are often misused or ignored by LinkedIn users, which is a shame. They provide an opportunity for you to capture employers or recruiter’s attention and convince them to stay on your page to find out more. In this section, I recommend you keep it short, sweet and to the point. Tell the visitor, in less than 30 words, why you’re good at your job and what problems you can solve for them. For example, a HR candidate may have: ‘An experienced HR Generalist who has a proven record in lowering employee turnover, designing and implementing e-learning software and solving ER cases.
Here you are aiming to showcase what you’re good at, in the most concise way possible.
This is probably the most important section of your profile, as this will determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for the job you’re searching for. Here you need to list the relevant experience that you have acquired, along with a brief description of your responsibilities within the role. More specifically, this involves including the name of the company, your job title and then a minimum of three points on your key responsibilities. Each point should also be short and concise. LinkedIn should be used as a ‘teaser’, to entice the reader into wanting to read your whole CV. Furthermore, your education, accomplishments and any volunteering you’ve undertaken can be added in this section as well.
Lastly, adding recommendations and contact information to your profile.
Recommendations are a great way to reinforce what you’ve already said about yourself. Having someone that you’ve worked with, either a previous boss or colleague, publicly vouch for you can be priceless. Additionally, asking previous colleagues to endorse you for certain skills relevant to your industry or role, can also attest to your competency.
At your discretion, you can also choose to add any contact details to your profile, that you deem appropriate. I would suggest adding an email address and be open to contact requests from other people on LinkedIn.
